Choosing the Right Cable Size
Cable size is chosen so the conductor can carry the load current safely without overheating, and so voltage drop over the run stays within limits. As a rough guide, you take the load current, add a 1.25 factor, and pick a copper cable whose current-carrying capacity exceeds that figure. In reality the correct size also depends on how the cable is installed (in conduit, clipped, buried), how many cables are grouped together, the ambient temperature — which matters a lot in Dubai — and the length of the run. Long runs need a larger cable to control voltage drop. This calculator gives a ballpark only; an undersized cable is a fire risk, so the final selection must be made by a licensed electrician to DEWA standards.
