💡 Lighting / Lux Calculator
Work out how many light fittings a room needs to reach the right brightness.
How Many Lights Does a Room Need?
Lighting design uses the lumen method: the number of fittings equals the target brightness (in lux) multiplied by the room area, divided by the lumens each fitting produces and two correction factors — a utilisation factor for how much light actually reaches the working area, and a maintenance factor for dimming over time. This calculator uses typical values (0.5 and 0.8) and lets you choose a target lux by room type, since a kitchen needs roughly twice the brightness of a bedroom. It's a solid starting point for planning a new room or a lighting upgrade; an electrician can fine-tune the layout and spacing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is lux?
Lux is brightness measured at the surface — one lumen spread over one square metre. Different rooms have different recommended levels.
How many lumens is an LED downlight?
A common 9 W LED downlight gives about 800 lumens; check the box, as efficiency varies.
